Do you know where Lady Jessie Street was born? How about who opened the Carillon? Or who planted the Lone Pine tree near the Australian War Memorial? More importantly, did you know you can find the answers to all of these - and more - questions merely by riding around Canberra on your bike? It is a great shame that if you were to ask many Canberran locals when the last time they visited one of the fantastic - and free - public institutions scattered about this town, most of them would say never, or not since the last time out-of-towners visited.

In mid-November 2011, a small team of dedicated TriHards took on the Burley Griffin Canoe Club's 24 hour challenge. Twenty-four hours of paddling up and down Lake Burley Griffin. And Canberra provided 24 hours of weather just for the event, starting in the baking heat, and finishing up in the drizzling wet!

When the TriHards first attempted the Canberra Times Fun Run back in 2007, they undertook it as a training run for their 'real' events in the AROC Paddy Pallin Adventure Race series. In 2008 they got a bit more serious, and completed the whole run non-stop. 2009 saw a mix of ages and long and short course entries scatter them throughout the field and in 2010 the Cyborg was the only TriHard flying the banner, achieving a personal best time despite several setbacks.
But in 2011 it became personal. In 2011 it became competitive. In 2011 the Cyborg realised a long-held dream.

Rumours have recently been spreading throughout the TriHards that one of their ranks has been engaging in the unethical, uncompetitive and just plain cheating behaviour of blood doping. Even more of a concern is the fact that it does not seem to have improved his results in the least!

The Cyborg is a fool for April, starting the month with the fantastic final race in the Paddy Pallin series in Newcastle, following it up with two runs in the Canberra Running Festival, then ducking off for a ride in the Mont, to be washed down the weekend after with a dive at Broulee and a paddle on the Clyde at the last weekend. Here at TriHards headquarters, we can't help but wonder if perhaps his little health scare from earlier in the year has put him of a mind to try to fit everything in before anything else happens; or perhaps he fears if he stops he'll rust!

Hundreds of competitors stood around unaware as history was made last weekend at the third race in the 2010-11 AROC Paddy Pallin series. At approximately 2:00 on Saturday, 12 February 2011, the long-held aspirations of the Area51 (aka Sydney) TriHards were realised. Months, if not years, of preparation, training and persistence had finally paid off; they had finally beaten the Canberra TriHards in an AROC Paddy Pallin event. Subsequently shouts of jubilation could be heard from as far away as New Zealand, where McFly’s relatives put down their sheep and picked up their beers to toast their favourite son’s victory.

Residents of Wentworth Falls were alarmed to discover zombies roaming their streets on morning of 2 May, 2010; fortunately they weren't the dangerous, fast moving, angry zombies of movies such as 28 Days Later; not, these were the classic, slow-shuffling zombies in the Romero style. They were, however, slightly different; rather than shuffling along with their standard plea for "brains", these white-clad zombies were shuffling through the streets moaning "bacon.... bacon...."
At approximately 5:00 on Sunday, 2 May 2010, the mighty TriHards ran shoulder to shoulder across Katoomba Oval to the finish line for the Wild Endurance; completing the grueling 100km trek in 33 hours and two minutes. But, more importantly, they completed the event as a team of four, and all of them made it though the finishing arch at the same time, despite twisted ankles, broken toes and painful exit wounds.
Many, many thanks go out to our tremendous support crew, without whom we wouldn’t have stood a chance. We’d also like to thank all of our generous sponsors; completing the walk is only half the challenge of the event.

So after an early start of weet-bix and coffee, the junior TriHards, officially known as the TweeHards sallied forth into the first real rain Canberra has had since Christmas. Why the TweeHards I hear you ask? Well The Cap'n is an experienced TriHard and the girls (The Pinkinator and Lu) are ever so cute, dainty and/or delicate, so it just sort of made sense.

The 2009 Urban was the final event for the TriHards in 2009, and like all good season finales, the event was marked by reminisces of events and races gone by, as the team wound at a leisurely pace over a course covering some very familiar ground in Canberra. Sure, they could have gone hard and set out to win the event, however, that would spoil their leisurely ride down memory lane!

The TriHards' partners have stepped up and are providing tremendous assistance to a truly worthy cause. These ladies are making the ultimate sacrifice for the month of Movember, not only in being seen in public with the TriHards sporting their attempts at mos, but facing the grim prospect of beard rash as the month goes on. Then again, considering the state of the TriHards after most of their races, perhaps this provides an easy excuse to avoid intimacy.

With a total time of 46 minutes and 30 seconds and only one wrong turn after setting out, I was feeling pretty smug. I had made it to Davidson High School in French's Forest where I was to get my first taste of a "real" orienteering event in the Sydney Summer Series. The rules are fairly simple: you have 45 minutes to collect as many checkpoints as you can, walking, running or mountain biking, you can take longer, incurring a time penalty if you do. I collected my map, checkpoint description sheet and card and departed at 16:43 sprinting off to my destiny!!!

As I'm sure the staff of TriHards sponsor PANDSI would agree, braving the great outdoors with a baby or toddler is one of the best ways to shake off the baby blues. It's a chance to get some fresh air and exercise and allow the hollering of your offspring to dissipate into the atmosphere. Somehow, being out of the house can just make things that little bit easier for both parents and babies, especially if you take along some friends to help out. However, to fully enjoy the experience, a little planning makes all the difference.

Here at the TriHards, we’re constantly amazed at the fitness level of some groups who enter into the various events we do. If you look at the results, particularly of the AROC races, as a histogram (no, we are not geeks!) you’ll see that the results never have the standard bell curve style of distribution. Rather, there is a small lump at the front, then a more normal looking bell curve. These people at the front are those we affectionately call freaks.

The most common response received when the TriHards would tell people of their intention to participate in the Wild Endurance was a simple, "You're insane."; Now that the event is done, and the TriHards are resting their weary feet, they would tend to agree with this opinion! Of the four TriHards entered into the event, Magic McFly was the only one to complete the entire event; a tremendous effort on his part! The Wild Endurance also marked a tragic turn of events for the TriHards-the Sydney branch soundly bested the Canberra branch-an achievement that will no doubt take a long, long time to live down.
